Tourism and Information

Fuengirola, much like the nearby resort of Torremolinos, was one of the original towns along the coast and existed well before tourism became popular. Evidence of this still exists in the town centre with its narrow streets and picturesque church.

Fuengirola town is distinguished by its 7 kilometers of beaches and its active harbour (part of which is still a working fishing port).

At one end of the beach lies Los Boliches, which can be considered an area in it's own right. It's a favourite spot for the British residents and the holidaymakers alike.

The streets that run along the sea front are full of bars and restaurants - although most of the entertainment bars are grouped together in the centre of town. Nearby you can find an area of restaurants and bars known locally as "fish alley"! Walking around these streets in the evening involves navigating between all the tables and chairs on the pavement, although saying that it does give you a chance to observe what everyone is eating and make a selection based on what you see!

Fuengirola Market

Fuengirola boasts one of the largest open-air markets on the coast. Find it every Tuesday on the feria ground. On Saturdays, at the same location, there is a huge and fascinating flea market. If these two are not enough for you, there is also a third, smaller market, held in the port every Sunday.

Like many Andalucian towns, Fuengirola has had a very mixed history. Over a couple of thousand years the Romans, Phoenicians and the Moors have occupied it. Evidence of this long history can still be found in many parts of the town and the surrounding area.

One monument of note is the Sohail Castle at the western end of the town. The castle and its surroundings gardens have recently been refurbished and it really does make for a· very pleasant visit. Some parts of the castle date back to Phoenician times and a few years ago it became famous as the setting for an advertisement for a very well know brand of lager. The advert' featured medieval people kicking around an empty can of the lager and thus "inventing" football. Why not check with the tourist office to see what's going on as there are various events that take place in the castle throughout the year.
